Menopause is seen as a natural phase of womanhood - the transition into the 'wise women'.

Unfortunately the journey into menopause is not the most comfortable transition for many. Symptoms experienced can significantly effect quality of life and balance. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture is a complementary medicine that can be utilised with or without Western Medicine interventions as a means to support the body through the process of menopause.

What is menopause?

Menopause is the permanent end of a women's menstrual periods, diagnosed as 12 consecutive months with out a period (_____). This can occur naturally or as a result of surgery or medical treatment.  In natural menopause a women's ovaries discontinue releasing eggs each month as a result of a reduction in the hormone oestrogen. These changes in the hormones is responsible for the symptoms associated with menopause. Most women naturally go through menopause between the ages of 45 and 60, with each experience varied. Some women may have no unwanted symptoms, whilst others can have several symptoms in varying combinations.

Can Acupuncture help with menopause?

While Western Medicine views menopause as the decline in hormones alone, Traditional Chinese medicine sees the symptoms of menopause as an umbrella term for many different underlying imbalances. The reason why the menopausal transition is so different for each women is due to the differences in internal balance.

Since the menopausal transition is such an individual and elongated process, tailored treatments such as those used in acupuncture may provide significant benefits.
